The company rebuilt the product from scratch in 2023 and kept the old one running as "Legacy Duet," so there are two Duets today. This page compares Trio with the one a new customer buys.

Every claim about Duet traces to its own published pages, cited at the bottom; independent reviews of the new Duet are scarce (one on Capterra), and this page says so rather than pretending otherwise. The subscription gap is small: $9 against $5, or about $100 against $50 a year. The 1% is the number that matters. Duet adds it to every statement a family pays, on top of Stripe's card fee, and by Duet's own FAQ the family "cannot pay your charge without paying the transaction fee." On a 25-student studio billing $4,000 a month, that is about $480 a year taken from families for the software the teacher chose. Trio adds nothing on top of Stripe's rate.
Duet is free for enrolled university students and half price for a documented first year of teaching, which is a genuinely good offer for that audience.

Where Duet still wins
- The Smart Scheduler. Families answer an availability form; Duet matches it against the teacher's hours and produces the semester schedule in one pass. Nothing in Trio builds a whole season for you. For a 40-student studio re-slotting every August, that is real hours back.
- No logins, ever. Statements, reminders, lesson notes, and booking links all arrive by text, with email as a fallback. Families who hate apps will like this.
- Cheaper than Trio Max. $9 flat beats $20 for a large solo studio that needs Max-tier features.
- Twenty years and a live community. Founded 2004, customers in 27 countries, open office hours Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, a Facebook group, and a podcast.
- Discounts that matter to new teachers. Free while you are a university student; 50% off your first year of teaching.
If you teach alone, plan to stay that way, and your families prefer texts to portals, Duet is a sound choice.
Where Trio wins
Room for a second teacher. Duet's own FAQ: "Currently, Duet is only set up to have single teacher access." Trio adds seats at $5 a month, and the studio-wide calendar, rosters, and billing already handle them.
A portal, without the password. Duet dropped the parent portal when it rebuilt; families get texts. Trio keeps the no-password benefit (a text code) and gives parents a place to see notes, practice history, repertoire, invoices, and messages, instead of scrolling back through SMS.
AI that Duet does not have. Nothing on Duet's site, help center, or blog mentions AI through November 2025. Trio drafts parent-ready lesson notes from what a teacher types or dictates, and Ask Trio answers "who owes money" or "who missed last week" on demand.
The family's bill is the teacher's bill. Duet's 1% lands on every statement a parent pays. Trio adds no fee of its own.
Free for small studios. Duet's only free path is university enrollment. Trio Free is $0 for up to 10 students, no card.

Trio's free tier is the real product for up to 10 students, no card, no clock (online card payments start at Pro, $5/mo). Put your real schedule in, invite a few families, and run one billing cycle. If your studio is one teacher and your families would rather text than log in, Duet's 30-day trial is worth running the same month.
