An invitation lets a parent, a guardian or an older student sign in to the parent portal. Only owners and admins send and resend invites. Teachers and staff see each person's account status only.
Who can get an invite
- Adults: a parent or guardian needs an email address on file.
- Students: a student needs a date of birth on file and must be 13 or older. If the student has no email, Trio asks for one before it sends the invite. For a younger student, the profile shows "Student must be 13 or older" in place of the button.
Account badges
Each adult on a family page, and each student on their profile, shows one badge:
- Trio Account - the person accepted the invite and can sign in.
- Invitation Pending - an invite was sent and not accepted yet.
- No Trio Account - no account and no open invite.
If Trio's email provider blocks the address because an earlier email bounced or was marked as spam, Trio saves the invite but sends no email, and shows a warning. Fix the address, then send the invite again.
An invite link expires after 7 days. The badge still reads Invitation Pending after that. Use Resend Invite to email the link again. A resent invite is good for another 7 days.
Where to send an invite
- Family page, adult row: Send Invite for an adult with an email and no account, and Resend Invite for an open invite.
- Add Adult dialog: the Send Trio invite switch. It turns on when you enter an email.
- Families list: the Invite to Trio button on a row. It sends the invite to the primary contact's email. It is disabled when the primary contact has no email.
- Student profile, Personal Details card: Send Invite or Resend Invite.
- Add Student wizard, Parent / Guardian step: the Send Trio invite switch, on by default, for a new parent with an email.
- Full Add Student form: the Send login invitation switch, for the student's own email. See Adding a Student.
- Lesson page: Invite next to "No Trio account", when no adult in the family has an account or an open invite.
The families list
Each row on the Families list shows one action:
- Message Family - someone in the family has a Trio account. It opens Messages addressed to an adult with an account, or to a student when only the student has one.
- Invitation Pending - nobody has an account yet, and an invite is open. Resend it from the family page.
- Invite to Trio - nobody has an account and no invite is open.
A parent never got the invite
- Open the family and look at the parent's row.
- If the row shows an email problem badge, the address bounced or the parent marked a Trio email as spam. See Email problems to fix it.
- Check that the email address is correct. If it is wrong, edit the adult and enter the correct one.
- Click Resend Invite. Ask the parent to look in their spam folder too.
What the family sees next
After a parent accepts, they sign in and go through a short set of welcome steps. See Parent Portal Overview for what families see.
